Growing Into Your Opportunities
Growing Into Your Opportunities
by Steven D. Huff
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest. On May 29, 1953 he scaled the highest mountain then known to man, reaching 29,000 feet straight up. For this accomplishment he achieved international notoriety. He was even knighted for his efforts. However, unless you've read his book, High Adventure, you might not know that Hillary had to grow into this success.
You see, in 1952 he attempted to climb Mount Everest, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to address its members. Hillary walked on stage to a thunderous applause. The audience was recognizing his attempt at greatness, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the edge of the platform. While pointing at a picture of the mountain he made a fist and said in a loud voice, "Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I'll beat you the next time because you've grown all you are going to grow... but I'm still growing!"
Most of life's biggest opportunities also represent life's greatest challenges. To be successful, most of us will need to grow into those opportunities. Here are a few ideas that may help Grow Into Your Opportunities:
Examine Your Potential
Your past does not determine your future. If it did, Edmund Hillary would never have started back up the mountain. Too often people find it easier to live in the past than to strive to reach their future potential. Learn from the past but keep focused on what you can become. Your potential isn’t measured by the nearest peaceful valley but by the summit of the highest mountain within sight.
Expand Your Experience
Some people can work in an industry for years without really expanding their level of experience. They simply repeat the same limited experiences year after year. While others always welcome the opportunity to learn about and to experience new things. The person who grows into their opportunities is the one who routinely strives to expand and explore new experiences. The sometimes controversial Aldous Huxley rightly said, “Experience is not what happens to a man. It’s what a man does with what happens to him.”
Push Yourself To Take Action
Ultimately we can only grow into our opportunities if we take action. An old Proverb states, “If you wait until the wind and the weather are just right, you will never plant anything and never harvest anything.” Obviously, conditions will never be perfect for any of our endeavors but we have to get started anyway. Lee Iacocca, certainly one of the auto industry’s most successful leaders, was once asked about his success. He responded, “I go back to what my parents taught me. Apply yourself. Get all the education you can, but then, do something. Don’t just stand there, make something happen.”
